Can LiDAR data be used in Civil 3D?

Yes. Surfaces, contours, breaklines, and linework are delivered in Civil 3D-compatible formats such as LandXML, DWG, DXF, and CSV so they import as usable design data rather than a static image.

Is LiDAR suitable for grading and drainage design?

Dense bare-earth surfaces with defined breaklines support grading and drainage analysis well. The required accuracy and contour interval should be defined before collection so flight planning and control match the intended use.

Can LiDAR produce bare-earth terrain beneath vegetation?

LiDAR records multiple returns per pulse, so a portion of the pulses reach the ground between vegetation. Ground return density drops under heavy canopy, which is accounted for in flight height, overlap, and point density.

What information does an engineer need to provide?

Project limits, access details, coordinate system and datum, accuracy expectations, desired contour interval, existing control, and the file formats your design team needs.

Can existing conditions be collected before final design?

Yes, and earlier is usually better. Preliminary collection supports feasibility, layout, and grading concepts, and the site can be recollected later if conditions change materially.

Can LiDAR surfaces be compared with a proposed design?

Yes. A collected existing-ground surface can be compared against your design or grading model to produce cut, fill, net quantities, and elevation-difference exhibits.

What contour intervals are available?

Interval is set by the project. One-foot contours are common for site and grading work, with larger intervals used on broad terrain studies. The interval should match the accuracy of the collected data, not exceed it.

Does Utah LiDAR provide stamped survey documents?

No. Utah LiDAR provides data collection and preliminary processing. Boundary determination, certified surveys, and stamped documents require a Professional Land Surveyor licensed in the project state.

All deliverables are provided as preliminary or supporting data. Stamped or permitted use requires review and certification by a licensed Professional Land Surveyor.
